Children vs Teens Challenge for Jeremiah's Hope

Every year, the children's ministry works hard to raise funds for Jeremiah's Hope, a ministry in the Ukraine to children. Last night, Andrew Kelly made his annual visit to Kingwood CofC and gave us an update about all the ways that God has worked in Ukraine this past year.

This year, we will be raising funds to stock a closet in the new Rescue Shelter ... a short-term placement facility for children who have been removed from their families. The children arrive without any of their basic needs. So, the special closet in the Rescue Shelter will be stocked with clothes, toiletries and other essentials for these kids.

What to do:
Pick up a folder from Shannon or Kevin. Fill up the folder with quarters or cash. Return to Shannon or Kevin. For every $10, that child's ministry gets 1 point. This is CHILDREN vs TEENS. Whoever raises the most money, WINS!!! You may fill up as many folders as you want with quarters. Contest ends February 26, 2012.

Ways to help:
1) Adults may help the children or teens win by donating quarters or cash. Just give it to a child in that ministry and make them promise it will go into their cards.
2) We DO NOT want pennies, nickels and dimes this year. It's too much to roll. Convert it to cash at CoinStar or your bank and then bring it to us!
3) We DO TAKE cash or check! We don't have to roll those!!!

Real Versus Myth: Teaching Our Children About Digital Enhancements

Last night, David showed me an article on his iPad that was very interesting. At Dartmouth College, some research has been done to develop a computer program that will rate the pictures we see in magazines and advertisements on a scale based on the amount of photo enhancements that have been applied to the photo. In case you are not familiar with digital photography, you can use any number of computer programs to change a digital image into whatever you want it be, and if you are good, the viewer of the photo won't be able to tell reality from the myth of the digital changes.

This Technology Might Soon Tell Us How Much An Image Is Enhanced

Everyday we see these digitally enhanced pictures everywhere we look. For women (and girls), we begin to form an image of who we want to be, on the outside, based on what these pictures look like. But, the reality is, these pictures aren't real ... they are a myth created with computer knowledge and artistic enhancements. No one is as perfect as the people in those pictures. Comparing ourselves the artificial beauty created in these pictures is pointless because even the most naturally beautiful women are digitally enhanced in most pictures that go to print.

Take time to read the article in the link above. It even includes before and after pictures so you can see the differences in each photo. (Warning: Some of the women are in skimpy clothes. Be prepared for this when you show it to your children). The article mentions a push to make a rating available on every picture based on how much digital enhancements has been applied to the picture. Great idea but we shouldn't wait for the government to "teach" our kids about digital enhancement. However, parents, you can use this article as a teachable moment for your children, female or male. Female's will learn to value their God-given beauty. Our young men, and even our not so young men, need to be reminded that those pictures they see of "perfect" women are only perfect because of digital enhancements. God made every woman beautiful but they will never be as perfect looking as a magazine advertisement.

Example Pictures: Review Before You Show Your Children

Taking It Home

Ask your son or daughter what constitutes real beauty. Make a list of all the descriptive words. Ask your child how they know that is real beauty. Can they find examples? (You could even provide a few magazines and let them pick out beautiful pictures. Or, print the ones from the website above and ask which ones are beautiful. You will know the slight differences are digital enhancements and will be able to share that later).

Next, read to them Proverbs 31:30.

Ask them: What does it mean that charm is deceptive? Beauty is fleeting?

Tell them, "Our culture is a very deceptive culture. What we see is not always reality. Some people know how to act nice, even when they don't have God's heart for other people. They deceive their friends by being friendly and then treating them with disrespect later. And, as you saw with your list, our our idea of beauty is often set with pictures that we see in books and magazines. But, in our culture, those same pictures maybe a lie."

Pull up the pictures from the article and show them the before and after pictures. You may also use the Dove Video: Evolution.

Talk to your child about what they see, their impressions of the changes that are made to each person.

Read to them Psalm 139:14. Remind your child that they (and their friends and/or future girlfriends and boyfriends) are fearfully and wonderfully made by God! He made them exactly the way He wants them. Each person is beautiful in their own way. And, the most beautiful people, are the ones that have a faith built strong in God.

Pray with your child that they are always able to see God's beauty in themselves and those around them and that they are not deceived by the tricks of the world.

Cookies with Santa - Sunday Morning, December 11th

There will be a photo opportunity for the parents.

Parent help needed:

2) Parents to bake sugar cookies and make hot chocolate for the children

5) 1 Parent to take pictures of Santa and children. We will put them on a website for parents to download and print at home.

Serve the World - Girl Needs Clothes

I recently became aware of a young girl that is in need of clothing. Her shoe size is 9/10 and clothes size is 5/6. Socks are also needed. She likes to play outside so jeans work well for her but anything is appreciated. Good quality hand-me-downs are perfectly acceptable. So, clean out those closets, and drop off those specific sizes at my church office and I'll pass on to the family. Thanks!

Small groups are still encouraged to meet and should include children in their groups. These are great nights for service projects and fellowships as well as family devotionals.

The Waiting Tree - A Project for Mom's on December 2nd

A Completed Waiting Tree

A few years ago, Edie Broussard showed me "The Waiting Tree, the Christmas holiday tradition in her family. She had found the idea in a publication and made one for her family. It is made of felt and you can see the picture of her waiting tree on the left.

Each symbol on the Waiting Tree symbolizes a portion of God's story leading up to the gift of His Son. I love this concept of advent, because, it helps us remember God's plan for the beginning of creation to the culmination of His desire to reconcile creation through the birth, life and death of Jesus. We will give you a script of the stories to read with your family each night. Edie says they usually discuss each symbol for 15-30 minutes a night, but, each family can make their own decisions on how they implement the waiting tree in their family.

On December 2nd, 7:00 PM, Edie and I would like to invite all the Moms that are interested in making a Waiting Tree for their family to come to the Ladies Bible Classroom. I plan to buy all the material to make the tree, and will let you know soon the cost to reimburse the church for the material. I expect it to be between $5-$10.

Please email me if you plan to attend. I will need a good headcount to have enough materials on hand. We hope this simple project will become a great teaching tool for your family and a keepsake to hand down through the generations.

Your Trash Our Treasure - Art Camp 2012

We sure love our Art Camp! In fact, our planning team took about a 5 second break after Art Camp 2011 and then started planning Art Camp 2012. They have already picked out the first projects and we NEED your help!

Art Camp 2012 is going green with our new theme, Upcycle. Upcycle is the idea of taking something ordinary and turning it into something extraordinary. Your trash is going to be our treasure!

The Art Camp committee is asking you to collect the following items:

250 glass jars with labels peeled off (12 to 32 oz)
320 cereal boxes
200 prepaid magazine subscription cards (you know the annoying ones in your magazines)
300 kids shoe box lids
200 applesauce cups
200 pudding or yogurt cups
puzzle pieces
colored comics from the newspaper (must be color)
small bubble bubble wrap
Lots and lots of metal washers - MEN CLEAN OUT THOSE TOOLBOXES!
Old sewing patterns - we will be using the tissue so you won't get it back.

Collection bins will be placed in the foyers within the next two weeks. We need to meet these needs by by June and we need EVERYONE to help to make it happen.

Additional Art Camp News
~ Art Camp: Upcycle will focus on the miracles of Jesus. We need four storytellers. The storytellers should be comfortable developing and telling a Bible story using very creative methods. You will have a room that will need decorations and you will tell the story at least 12 times over 4 days. YES, this is a tall order! But, we think it is a great theme and a good time to add a Bible story center to Art Camp. Let me know if you think you might be one of storytellers.
~ Beginning in 2012, the class for four year olds will only be open to the children of volunteers (must volunteer for the entire four days). We want to give these little ones additional time to complete their projects in a lower key environment. Susan Maxwell will be leading this class.

More Information on Bullying

This past Sunday, I was given the opportunity to use a small amount of our worship assembly to talk with our children about the topic of bullying. I know many of our own kids are hurting because they are being picked on, name called, or because of physical behaviors directed to them at school and other events. In case you weren't there, I gave the children these three points to remember for when they are being bullied. 1) God loves you and the child that is picking on you. Go to God in prayer and pray for yourself and that child. 2) God gave you many caring adults in the form of parents, teachers, and Sunday School teachers. Tell them what is happening. 3) God gave you a church family that loves and cares for you and wants you to always feel safe. The church family can help by showing love and attention to the children during our meeting times. Jim Herman, one of our shepherds, then lead a beautiful prayer of blessing and protection over our children.

I've had several parents come to me to tell me that their children are feeling powerless in situations of being bullied. Remember to keep the door of communication open. Read the articles in the earlier post on bullying. Also, Jeannie Herman sent me this link: www.stopbullying.gov. It has excellent resources for all ages.

Nursery, King's Court and Worship 411 Winter Recruitment

It is almost time to start making the nursery schedule for the winter quarter. Currently, we are shorthanded most Sundays as we averaging 15+ babies in attendance.

If you are not currently serving in the nursery and you would like to be, send me an email back at kwcoccfm@gmail.com.We could use additional workers or workers willing to serve additional Sundays. In addition, if you are scheduled to serve and do not come (and do not ask for a sub) know that this is not only an inconvenience to our workers but the environment for our children is not as safe as it should be without all of our volunteers.

On average, during a typical worship service, we have about 10 volunteers serving in nursery, King's Court and Worship 411. Each of these volunteers serve 2 or 3 Sunday's a quarter, which means we need AT LEAST 45 volunteers to completely fill our schedule for 13 weeks for these three classes. Please consider serving, we can't do this without everyone pitching in.

Also, if you would like fill needs in King's Court or Worship 411, I'm doing those schedules at this time. We have several on the King's Court and Worship 411 teams that are serving in other ministries as well and they would appreciate additional help to lighten their volunteer responsibilities.

Bullys at School? Helpful Information for Parents

Recently, several children in our ministry has begun to confide in their trusted teachers and leaders that they feel powerless over certain situations at school. At this point in the school year many of our children begin to settle into their routines and some children begin to show disrespect to their teachers and classmates. Sometimes, these actions cross the line of what we consider typical child's play of being called names and picked on. Children may begin to feel bullyed. As a parent, it is hard to determine if a child is experiencing typical childhood antics or if they are in fact being bullyed.

I've asked myself these questions many times, especially as River has come home and told me some things that happen at school. We desire to give her conflict management skills to work out these issues and to intervene as little as possible. Sometimes, though, good conflict management skills will not solve the problem for our kids. It is these times that children should seek help.

Today, I found three great articles on a children's ministry website. As a parent, I found the information very helpful and I know you will too! I hope you take the time to read over each one.

Elementary Bible Skill Goal January 1, 2012

Our elementary children have a goal to add a new Bible skill to their skills toolbox by the beginning of 2012. We are learning the books of the Old Testament!

Parents, how many of you know the books of the Old Testament? All of them? WITHOUT LOOKING! You may not use your tabs either!

I'll admit, I'm not good at the Old Testament books either. But, YouTube is here to bail us out! There are many different versions of the Old Testament Books of the Bible song. I chose the following song because it not only emphasized the names of the books, but other useful facts such as the number of books in the Old Testament and the genre of the book. It shows the name of the book while the kids sing the song, increasing their ability to read the funny words that make up Old Testament book names. And, let's not forget the catchy tune! Parents, just so you can brush up on your Old Testament books, or, help your kids learn theirs, I'm posting the video.

Stranger/Teachers and Parent Teacher Conferences

This past week, I had River's 3rd Grade fall parent teacher conference. The world of public school has been a little concerning to me. At no other time do I hand my child off to virtual strangers and in a building that I'm granted access in only with permission. And while we have benefited greatly from the expertise of her school teachers, as a parent, it is so difficult to imagine that a stranger gets to spend 8 hours a day with my child. That person is to be considered trustworthy because the school district says so. No wonder so many parents become "helicopter parents" in this structure, just trying to stay connected to their child's life and protect them in an environment that is as unknown for the parent as it is for the child.

That's why I love parent/teacher conferences. It's one of the few times a year that, as a parent, I'm invited into my child's little world of school and given a glimpse at who she is when she isn't with me.The teacher is still a stranger to me, though, I've heard about her everyday for weeks. I'm the expert on my child and she is the expert on education, and, somewhere we are suppose to find common ground to help my child both in and out of the classroom. You got to admit, it's daunting for parents and teachers!

However, this stranger/teacher, the one person that spends lots of time with my child than I do, gave me some real insights into the life of my child. It wasn't the academic success and concerns that were the most insightful to me. It was the spiritual ones. As we talked about work ethic, friendliness, concern for others, respect to authority, and desire to learn, I remembered that many of these traits are those of a child of God. I couldn't help but think about Galatians 5:22, "but the fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control". I asked myself some key questions:
1) In this secular environment, are the fruits of His spirit evident in my child?
2) Where is she falling short that I can reinforce at home through study of His Word, prayer for her tender heart, and even my example of showing these fruits in situations that I may be struggling in as well?
3) Does she stand apart from her classmates on worldly issues as in Romans 12:2, "Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind? If not, what needs to change?

Parents, you will be meeting with your child's teachers throughout the year. Reflect, through prayer, on what your teacher tells you about your child. Ask God to show you how to parent your child not just for academic success but for a life that is "holy and pleasing to God". If you begin to sense your child is spiritually off-course, take action! Pray without ceasing. Then, make changes! Change your priorities, change what your child is exposed to, or help your child change the bad habits that are beginning to form.

Teachers, remember you are a stranger/teacher to a good number of parents as well! Remember this when you meet with the parent. Remember the parent is nervous about giving their child into your loving and capable hands.Pray for each child and that God will give you a word of blessing that a parent can take hold of and use to shape their child's life, not just academically but spiritually as well. You don't have to share your spiritual life with parents to do this. It is fully possible by just remembering that each of these children are a child of God and you are being given a small role in their life and then speak from the heart.

Trunk or Treat This Saturday

Parents are encouraged to attend with their children. Kindergartners are welcomed as long as one parent attends as a chaperone. The bus will be pulling out at 12:00 pm, so you will not have time to run out and get something to eat like in the past. The Middle School/High School will be traveling to Impact to serve food while the elementary stocks the distribution center with the donated food. We expect to return to Kingwood around 3:00 PM.

Parents this is a great oppoortunity to be the hands and feet of Jesus by serving alongside of your children and teens. We are so very blessed that our children don't really understand hunger. Impact has served thousands of hungry families and outdoorsmen. This summer at Impact VBS one young boy inhaled three lunches, we are sure he had not eaten in 1 or 2 days. Edi this precious little guy whose family are refugees from Africa came in every morning with his siblings and cousins hungry. One morning he could not stuff the food in his mouth fast enough, he scarfed down three servings.

David Beagle runs the distribution center at Impact, he serves with such compassion, dignity and love. The outdoorsmen don't just take, they have given back thousands of hours of service at Impact, that amazes me!

Children's Christmas Musical

The Kingwood Church of Christ Children's Ministry is planning a children's Christmas musical to be held on December 18th. Practices will most likely be held on Sunday afternoons, during Journey Land opening time, and by practicing lines with parents at home.

Elesa Mason will direct our musical. We need a headcount of all kids that would be interested in participating in the musical as soon as possible. Please comment on the blog, facebook or email me if you'd like to sign your child up for this opportunity.

We are now signing up cars to participate in Trunk or Treat. Sign up in Adult Bible class on Sunday morning or comment on the blog, Facebook or through email.

Cars should arrive at KWCOC by 5:40 PM with candy or other goodies. Cars may be decorated and/or may include games. Everyone is invited to Trunk or Treat (bring friends). This is a very low key way to serve our children, deepen our relationships and have fun with each other.

Pack the Pulpit and Impact Service Project

Impact Church of Christ is asking for the following items for the distribution center:

Lot's of ramen noodles are welcomed! Also, rice and pinto beans may be bought in bulk at Sams.

We will "Pack the Pulpit" with these donations on Sunday Morning.

Firefight Sunday

Sunday morning, October 16th, is our annual Firefighter Sunday in which we honor our Firefighters and have dinner on the grounds.
Please note the following changes:
1) Class is from 9:00-9:45 AM and Worship will begin at 10 AM THIS SUNDAY ONLY!
2) Worship 411 will not meet. Please keep your elementary age children in the auditorium.
3) We will NEED extra help in the nursery. Will you be willing to help out?

The Blog is Back ....

Last year, I stopped using the blog as a communication tool in order to try a few new things. The new things were innovative enough, yet, they were very time consuming.

At least when I used the blog, there was always a place for members and visitors to get the information when they wanted it. All you have to do is go to www.kingwoodkids.org or www.keepingupwiththekingskids.blogspot.com.

There is no perfect system for communication. But, what I have learned this year, is that a system that is quick and easy to use and that gets updated regularly is much better than when that becomes a drag and is not used at all.

Remember, you can subscribe to the blog via the link on the side and get updates sent directly to your email box. I will also post to Facebook each time I update information and you can even re-share that information with your friends.

Lesson Topics for All Ages - Feburary 13

This week your children learned:
Preschool: The Bible Story your children are studying is "Jesus Walks on Water" from Matthew 14:22-23. The Key Verse was Mark 10:14b. In Bible class, they learned that, "Jesus Came for Us All/Have faith in Jesus". In King's Court, they learned "Jesus changes our lives" and on Wednesday night they will learn that "Everyone can come to God".

Elementary: Journey Land is continuing our study of the death of Jesus. Each week students rotate to one of 6 workshops and learn a portion of the story. In the opening time, the kids are practicing songs for Easter Sunday. Worship 411 the children discussed that they have to "Deal With Fear". God did not give us a spirit of fear and does not want us to be afraid. God listens to our prayers when are afraid and takes away the fear. Knights for Christ and LTC are continuing their verses and study of Revelation. Wednesday night the K-3rd grade are focusing on FUN and BIBLE! They love the crafts and games they are playing. 4th and 5th grade girls are continuing their study, talking about how God gave women a "super power" that should only be used for good! Just FYI - we are talking about modesty!

Family Activities - Ways to get involved

Some of you missed Sunday's Fellowship Lunch and Meeting but wanted to know how you might help out. The sign up sheets will be on the bulletin board by the offices. Here are the available opportunities. Be sure to email me or drop by the bulletin board to sign up!

Sunday Lunches:
Host/Hostess of 2nd Sunday Lunches make plans for the meal and decide if it will be held at the church building (potluck, catered) or held at a local restaurant with space for 30-50 people. We'd like to advertise the location/details for 2 to 3 weeks before each meal.
Host/Hostess needed for: June, July, August, September, December

Playdates
During the school year, the play dates will be mostly for at-home Moms with toddlers and preschoolers, though, everyone is invited. During the summer, play dates may include all ages as kids are out of school.
Hostess Needed: July, August, September, October, November, December, January and February.

There are also sign up sheets to plan the parties (Easter, Christmas, Valentines), be contacted to deliver meals to those that have had babies, and to work in the nursery.

Final Details for the Family Fellowship Lunch

This Sunday AM, the family fellowship lunch will be held immediately after services in the new Ladies Bible Classroom. I believe the room number is 125 (it is at the end of the old preschool hallway).

EVERY PARENT must pick up their child immediately following nursery, King's court and Worship 411. Since those of us that are working to get the lunch kicked off are also serving in these classes, we need your child picked up so your meal will be ready for you.

I would love to have 2-3 people that could be helpers for the day. I need someone to sign for the pizza and show the delivery man where to put it. We have all the drinks and supplies in the room but we will need a man or two to fill up a cooler of ice and bring it to the classroom.

Children will eat with their parents and then we will have some teens that will be available to babysit them in the gym so the parents can socialize and sign up to coordinate various events. If your TEEN IS AVAILABLE Sunday, please let me know.

Last, everyone will have the opportunity to sign up to host or coordinate specific events, much like we did when Brandy called us together each year. From the survey we passed around, we have narrowed down to some of the most popular events. However, if you are particularly passionate about any kind of event and think you can get all your adult friends to join you, then, be prepared to advertise it and host it.

Ok, I think that is all for now. We are working on sign up sheets and after the meeting on Sunday I'll send out information in the newsletter for everyone to know what they could sign up to host. I've had several people tell me they want to be involved but have other plans this weekend.

Worship 411

Today I received our new curriculum for Worship 411. It looks really good, very well done. It comes with: a countdown and Power Point Game, songs, pre-made slides for the lesson presentation, and a short video. I think it will be "easy" to lead a quality, elementary children's worship in our short 30 minute time span with these materials.

I'm excited about our first study topic, "Fear". It seems that our kids are growing up in a world where fear can really grab hold. Children deal with bully's, conflict, parent's travels, a harsh political environment, school shootings, a desire for real connection. It would be easy for a child to internalize these events that they cannot control, and, experience many negative emotions.

During Worship 411, we are going to "Deal With It!", the Biblical way, and learn about some of the negative feelings and actions that weigh heavily on our children and explore what the Bible has to say.

I anticipate our start day for Worship 411 to be February 6th, if not a week or so sooner.

Here are some things you will need to know:
1) Worship 411 will target Kindergarten - 3rd grade children. 4th/5th are welcome to come and will likely be used in leadership roles.
2) Any KWCOC member that chooses to use Worship 411 for their children will NEED to sign up to help on a rotating basis.
3) We NEED a few more team leaders that can commit to teaching once a month. As I mentioned, everything is scripted, prepared, and all you need to do is familiarize yourself with the material and present it on your assigned Sunday.

A Thank You Note from Maj S. Brackin: US Army

Not too long ago, the children in our ministry drew pictures to be sent to the troops serving in Iraq. I had forgotten that we had taken this opportunity until today, when we received a thank you note from Maj S. Brackin. In fact, I'm having a Mommy Moment in that I can't even remember when we did this project but I remember the kids working so hard on their pictures! Several of our children participated in this project and while he is referring to one of the pictures that he received I'm sure each member of the armed forces that received a picture was equally touched. I thought I'd share it with you all. I've stapled it to the bulletin board if you'd like to drop by and check it out. It would be a good reminder to your children how a little act of kindness is serving the world in the name of Christ.

I received your wonderful drawing - a beautiful butterfly, orange with blue wings, surrounded by hearts and flowers. It made me think of my little boy and girl at home in Austin, Texas. Your drawing reached me in Basrah, Iraq on December 6th, 2010. I found it at the 450 on my way to the gym. A Prayer For The New Year

As I read Eileen Adams 2010 Prayer Blessings, it surprised me to read all of their children's ministry blessings. I know that God continually blesses this ministry, but, it's easy to overlook those blessings in the everyday routine of ministry to children. God faithfully has used, and will continue to use, His servants to grow children to love God with all their heart, soul, mind and strength.

Maybe, in a few days, I'll post all the ways He has blessed our ministry this year.

Until then, I ask you to join me in this prayer over our ministry to children and their families.

God, open our eyes to the needs around us. Let us not go through a single day without seeing this world with your eyes, identifying those that are lost and hurting. Give us a desire to share the Good News, not just our church events or meeting times, but your love, grace, forgiveness and redemption. In every activity, every service, and every class, let us never to fail in doing our part of turning the hearts of parents and children towards one another and towards you. But, at the same time God, let us remember that many of your precious children are born to parents who do not know you and may have hardened hearts towards your love. God, for those children, bring them to us, so that we may be a living example of Jesus, who took time to bless the little children in a world in which they would have been forgotten. Forgive us for our own shortsightedness and give us courage to step out on faith when your vision is larger than our own. When you have placed a ministry on our hearts and in our path, you have also divinely provided the volunteers, money, facilities, and resources for this ministry. Art Camp 2011 Leadership Team Forming

Year 6! It's here! At least for the coordinating team, Year 6 is here. That is because the Art Camp that almost 250 children enjoy each summer is not planned in a month, or two months. We give ourselves more than 6 months of planning to have a successful Art Camp.

Now that we are in Year 6 ... some good things are happening.

1) We know what it takes to make Art Camp happen. This a good thing, no more scratching our heads trying to figure things out.

2) We know that picking out projects take the longest and that is why we are starting NOW! Just after the first of the year, we will have our first Art Camp Directors meeting.

3) We have successfully registered campers on-line, learned the kinks, and fixed them.

4) We have furniture! Yes ... this was a stress from last year but we are ready to roll with the furniture we bought this year after Art Camp.

What do I need from you?

1) Would you enjoy being part of the Director team? We need to know now if you are interested.

2) Would you enjoy being an elective leader? We'd like to have the elective teachers in place by mid-March.

3) Would you like to serve as a group leader or center teacher? Be thinking about these service positions now! We need to have these leaders in place by mid-March as well.

You guys know how much I like the DVD series, "What's In The Bible"! Phil Vischer, creator of Veggie Tales, has put together an extremely good series to help children build their Bible literacy.

Just in time for Christmas, he has released 12 web clicks of "What's In The Bible" discussing popular Christmas beliefs and legends. Clive and Ian, the puppet adventurers from the series, are answering questions. Each episode is posted on a different persons blog. I'm sorry I can't post them all here.

Journey Land Workshop Leaders Needed Starting January 16th

Our elementary children attend Journey Land on Sunday mornings. Each week, they get to visit a different workshop, a class that is designed around a particular learning style. This style of ministry we often say has, "the creativity of VBS with the depth of Bible Class".

The workshops are very easy to teach. Teachers receive a curriculum guide with a full lesson plan. They then prepare one REALLY GOOD lesson, and, teach it for 6 weeks. Teachers love that they can put the time and effort into that one REALLY GOOD lesson and perfect it as they go through the rotations.

We only have two openings on our team right now! That's really amazing to me because more and more, our teachers are saying this is so easy and fun, they want to just keep going with it!

For this next rotation, we need a STORY Workshop leader and a THEATER Workshop leader. Our lesson topics will the Trial and Death of Jesus. I have the curriculum ready for the teacher and can even help you work it up over the Christmas holidays.

Christmas Holiday's Children's Ministry Schedule

Each year we adjust our class schedule to meet the needs of our volunteers and the families that attend KWCOC during the Christmas holidays.

December 12: Sunday Funday - 3rd-5th grade students. $15.00 plus a $5.00 wrapped gift to exchange. We will be leaving immediately following services, having lunch with the other churches attending the Sunday Funday, and participating in service projects and games.
December 19: Bible Bucks Palooza - Kindergarten- 5th grade, Bible Class. Double "bucks" for the usual (bring a friend, bring a Bible and come on time). Earn lot's of extra's as we review the lessons we've learned over the past 7 weeks. No King's Court and no Sunday PM Bible Classes.

December 22: No Wednesday Night Bible Class

December 26: No Sunday AM or PM Bible Class, No Nursery or King's Court during worship

December 29: No Wednesday PM Bible Class

January 2: No Sunday AM or PM Bible Class, No King's Court during worship

If you have children in the nursery, you probably have noticed that things are just slightly different week after week. However, you may not know that we have been working diligently at cleaning up and doing some minor remodeling to the old "extended care" to create some new preschool classrooms.

I'm very excited about this work. For the first time, ever, we have space to work with without feeling cramped around the schools much needed equipment. We are also able to make some key decision on the location of our classroom to address certain needs that we have.

For instance, if you have ever had a child in Cradle Roll, Preschool and Elementary, you know that you have to go all over our building to take children to class. Now, Cradle Roll and Preschool will be on the same 1st floor hallway with elementary located directly above. The advantage to our parents and visitors are numerous, starting with an easy drop off and pick up. Volunteers will be able to help each other and not be spread thin covering different area's of the building.

I wanted to share some pictures of the work as it stands today, Tuesday, November 30th. I also want to ask that you each pray about your involvement in the coming months in decorating and maintaining this classrooms. We no longer have part-time and full-time school teachers to do it for us. We get to step up in our ownership of these rooms and our ability to make them kid friendly and attractive.

Once a quarter, we join other Houston area churches on an outing with their elementary students. Here is the information for the next Sunday Funday! RSVP to Shannon if you are coming (commenting on this post or on Facebook is sufficient).

What: Sunday Funday! Bring $15 PLUS a wrapped gift under $5 for a boy OR a girl. We will have lunch, participate in a service project and have a gift exchange.

When: December 12th. The bus will leave immediately following services from the FLC doors. We will return around 5:00 PM, in time for LTC.

I was just catching up on reading some of my favorite blogs, one of which is written by my aunt, author and speaker to Mothers, Sally Clarkson.

She had two posts that are called the "Mystery of Discipline". I thought some of you may enjoy the helpful tips and encouragement to think beyond the frustration of the moment of a child not obeying.

If you are like me, you will read through her helpful suggestions and think "yeah, I know that but ..."! As a busy parent raising two kids, sanity goes out the door the minute the almost 2 year old throws a brand new bottle of Pace Picante sauce and watches it shatter, screams while he is in time out for the action and then takes it out on his sister (BIG BITE), all with no time to spare before the tardy bell. Ummm, no, this doesn't happen in my house :-) The idea of "training up a child" goes out the window with a "don't ever do it again" and "I'm sorry you are going to be late for school, again". But, what most parents need a reminder from time to time that punishment may not be the most appropriate consequence for the action. I especially appreciate the second article that asks good, child centered questions that may have lead up to the misbehavior in the first place, like, maybe someone was hungry and chips and dip sounded like a good idea at the time.

Anyway, I hope you take a moment to read these articles, because, in all seriousness, God has given each of us a precious gift in our children and we should show the same love, discipline and grace to our children as He has shown us.

Family Bible Class Next Sunday Morning

This is Thanksgiving week! What a special time to share with family and friends as we reflect on the many reasons to be thankful for that which God provides! In the busyness of Thanksgiving week, we feel that many of our Bible class teachers need the extra time spent with family and want to give them a small break from preparing for class.

Steve Parker has agreed to help our parents and children have some time TOGETHER in a Family Bible Class this next Sunday morning. Each family will write a "Psalm of Thanksgiving" as part of the class. I know that we will ALL be encouraged by reflecting on the Scriptures as family as well as through Steve's encouragement to be the spiritual leaders of our own homes.

WE WILL PROVIDE CLASS FOR OUR CRADLE ROLL CHILDREN. NO OTHER PRESCHOOL OR ELEMENTARY CLASS WILL BE STAFFED.

If your children are in Middle School, High School or grown up and you usually attend Steve Parker's class, I believe you will STILL be encouraged and spiritually nourished by the topic. Do not hesitate to come. If you feel that this topic is not right for you, the other adult classes will meet as usual next Sunday AM.

We need you to register for childcare for the church wide adult Christmas Party.

Cost is $5.00 a child to offset childcare expense. We do not want money to be an issue for anyone. (hint, hint)

We typically limit our childcare to children 1 year and up. However, if you have a child under the age of 1 and would like to attend, please call and talk to us. If we have enough helpers, we would love to watch your baby.

We will need Middle School students to help out. Please let Emily or I know if you are a Middle School student and you can VOLUNTEER some hours of childcare. I will sign off for volunteers hours if you need me too.

Emily Barclay has taken on the job of coordinating our nursery and Cradle Roll classes. She told me of some needs for these classes. In short, your help is needed! Please continue to read on for more information. Email Emily @ emj_20@hotmail.com to help out.

Volunteer Keeping Their Scheduled Assignments
Each week, Emily calls and/or emails our volunteers to remind them of their service in the nursery. She doesn't require that you call her back if YOU ARE PLANNING TO WORK as scheduled. However,if you cannot work your scheduled day, you MUST call her back and let her know if a) you've traded shifts with someone or b) you need her to help you find a substitute. When you forget to let her you cannot work your assigned shift, we are very short handed and many times our Cradle Roll teachers end up filling the gap AFTER they have already taught the babies Bible class.
Thank you our workers who have consistently worked their scheduled days or have picked up extra shifts because we had a lack of helpers.

Volunteers Needed
It's become apparent that we have a GREAT need for additional nursery workers. We have an average of 15 babies each Sunday, most under the age of two. This Sunday, SEVEN workers busily attended to the children. Sometimes babies need to be rocked and fed, which require one-on-one care. The other workers are playing with the children, changing diapers, feeding the children snacks, and cleaning up toys. It's really "ALL HANDS ON DECK". PLEASE, PLEASE sign up to be a nursery worker. Emily currently has several Sunday's in the winter quarter with only 2 confirmed workers, which are not enough workers to open our nursery. A schedule will be passed around tomorrow in Ladies Bible class to make it easy for everyone to sign up.

Nursery Policies/Procedures
We have tried different methods to make sure our nursery is clean, organized, and safe for the children. If you are a volunteer or parent, THANK YOU for trying these methods with us. Some work, some don't. If we don't try, we won't be able to make it better. We are actively reviewing all of our procedures and tweaking as needed. Please continue to brave these attempts at making a better environment for your children. We are very pleased with some of the new things we have in place and strive to show God's love to your children each day.

Lions and Tigers and Bears. Oh my!

Ok, there are not any bears in our nursery but we did add a lion, giraffe, birds, and trees. There is even a cute little monkey to match our 15 or so Sunday Morning monkeys! Today, Emily and I and our two sweet helpers (and their friend) did a little decorating in the nursery. There is still much to be accomplished. Here are a few pictures. We are considering a vinyl phrase or Bible verse above the trees. Help us out! What do you think it should say? We can cut anything on the Cricut!

Worship 411 Update

Many of you have asked when we will begin Worship 411 again. Worship 411, for our elementary children, was halted at the end of last school year as Chuck DeBenon and Carri Tacker stepped aside for a much needed break.

We are still open to restarting Worship 411 when we have at least 4 teams of two adults to lead the elementary children's worship. I think it will be important to have the team approach so that our volunteers do not feel over-committed.

At the same time, we still need additional consistent volunteers in some of Sunday morning Bible classes, so, we must be careful to not draw volunteers already teaching away from their current responsibilities or overwhelm them with too many classes. I have a couple of volunteers that are teaching 3 times a week right now!

If you feel that an elementary children's worship is important to your family and to visitors that we may be reaching out to in our community, I encourage you to step up and let me know that you'd like to lead in this ministry.

Nursery/Preschool Facelift Update

We were excited to begin using our new and improved nursery on Sunday morning. The new paint and clean floors sure makes it look nice. We have not had the opportunity to decorate the walls, yet, but will be adding bulletin boards and decorations very soon. Please let me know if you'd like to help!

The preschool classrooms have been on hold while the contractors finish up the nursery and offices. They will be back on those next week and we will NEED a lot of help setting up and decorating rooms as soon as possible after they are complete.

Child Protection Policy Renewal

It is time to renew our members that were trained under the child protection policy about 5 years ago. While there is not an exact guideline as to how often members renew their training, we feel that it is VERY IMPORTANT to meet minimum requirements set by the State of Texas for those that work with children in similar environments. The State requires training every two years.

I would like to ask that all members renew their training at their earliest convenience. To do this you should:

1) Fill out the application form: click here to go to that website.

2) Watch your inbox for a link to the Ministry Safe Child Abuse Preventing Training website.

3) Complete the on-line training.

All information will be stored on a SECURED website. We will continue to do individual training for each volunteer opportunity as needed. It is our goal to have the majority of our members re-certified under this new state approved training by the end of December.

12 Apostles Game

One of our Bible skills we are focusing on for the next 6 weeks in Journey Land is knowing the names of the 12 apostles and a fact or two about each one.

Click here for a fun computer game I found today that is FREE! This will be good for you 3rd graders and up. Younger kids might be frustrated with the game unless you give them a list of correctly spelled names.

Here is another FREE GAME website, click here. This website actually has two games, one game allows kids to match the apostle with the fact. The other game is a memory game, which may be helpful to younger kids that are just trying to learn these funny Bible names. We will probably use the matching game in "JourneyLand Park" where we review the Bible story, skills and verse in each rotation.

Family Worship Recap

When we talked about calling today a "Family Worship" and closing our nursery while it's facelift continues, we jokingly called it "Chaos Sunday". It's difficult to have a little guy in the worship service but I have a 7-year helper in the form of a Big Sister. Some parents have two or more of equal age or close in age and that can get fairly rowdy.

But, all in all, Family Worship is a joyous place to be. We didn't have a church nursery most of the time in the church I grew up in because we didn't really have any babies most of the time. But, I remember the men making announcements to the effect that it is ok if we hear those babies cry in worship, they are God's little babies. They also declared you a member on your second visit ... but that's another post.

. That's Jeff Adams with Reese. Reese wandered over to Jeff just a few minutes after worship began. Jeff snatched him up and loved on him for a while. In many churches, Jeff wouldn't know Reese. The Adams have a college and high school boy. Jeff loves the babies and is one of our most consistent Cradle Roll helpers. This reminded of the beauty of intergenerational worship. Watching the church families come together as spiritual grandparents, aunts, uncles, brothers, sisters and parents. I'm sure there were others throughout the auditorium that participate as spiritual families this morning.

As we began the morning, another wonderful thing happened. One of the Middle School girls that are dear to my heart searched me out to tell me, "I'm being baptized this morning"! Lainey, I'm very happy for you and thank you for sharing your special decision with me in such a joyoust way before our services. Here are those pictures:

All of this made me think about how those of us in paid and volunteer leadership positions can sometimes think of Sunday morning as the chaos that has to be managed. The timing that has to be worked out among all the leaders of worship, the nursery workers that must be in place and even the toys that must be disinfected to properly care for kids adds up to one REALLY BIG task shared by many people. But, then I realized, that God's Kingdom must look a little bit like chaos every day from up above and His people coming together, to focus solely on Him, is the most important, and orderly, activity that we do all week. That few moments when all of His people, His community, stop, focus, sing, pray, commune, fellowship, love, rejoice, encourage, and forgive each other in His name is, perhaps, the most beautiful thing God ever created.

Family Worship This Sunday (no nursery or King's Court)

CSK was able to move the last of their classes, MDO A&B, over to their new facility on Monday. These classes met in the nursery area and we knew that once they moved we'd need to freshen up the nursery. Fresh paint is already on the walls. The floors will be cleaned thoroughly next week and new furniture and toys will be added to the room. We have decided to CLOSE THE NURSERY this Sunday ONLY in order to finish these updates.

Many volunteers work hard to provide the convenience of a nursery and preschool children's worship. We know this schedule change will be an inconvenience for some, but, ask for your blessing as we prepare this FRESH, NEW nursery facility.

New Nursery and Cradle Roll Director - Emily Barclay

If you have children in the Cradle Roll classes, you have probably met Emily. Her family placed membership here a year or so ago. She has a sweet baby boy and is a stay-at-home Mom. She has been sharing the responsibility of teaching the baby class with Jessica Mynes for several months.

Emily has agreed to coordinate our nursery, Cradle Roll, and childcare needs for KWCOC. Emily will be giving you a call if you serve in one of these ministries. She is already hard at work reviewing policies and determining how to better communicate the details that are needed to make the nursery run smoothly. If you have children in this age group, you will notice some changes. Please go with the flow as we figure out some of the important tasks that need to be accomplished to make the nursery even better!

Emily will also help to maintain our supplies in the nursery and cradle roll. So, if you know we are out of an item, let her know.

One of Emily's big jobs is coordinating our paid childcare workers. If your need childcare for ANY EVENT at the church building, let Emily know a few weeks early and she will line up the childcare for you. She will let you know if you need to ask parents to share the cost of childcare or if it the childcare needs are covered in the budget.

Emily will be coordinating our Parent's Night Out. She is super excited to serve in this way and to help the ministry designed to enrich marriages by providing parent's affordable childcare for night out.

Please give Emily a big "welcome" to our Children's Ministry leadership team and support her as much as possible.

Bible Bucks Closet

In case you haven't seen it, here is the Bible Bucks closet. Bible Bucks is an incentive for children to actively participate in class, recogonize them for their positive behavior, and reinforce positive habits such as arriving on-time to class and bring their Bibles. The "signs" on the door are lists for acheiving 50,100, and 150 Bible Bucks. Bible Bucks prizes range from 1 Buck to 150 Bucks. Children enjoy having immediate positive reinforcement in receiving the Bible Buck and in picking out their own prizes when visiting the closet. They also learn responsibility, as they all know that Miss Shannon does not replace missing Bible Bucks, even if there are tears.

Journey Land Musuem

Each week, elementary children get to attend Journey Land during our Sunday AM Bible Class. The goal of Journey Land is to increase the depth of our Bible study, while, aknowledging every child is different and have their own learning style.

The Journey Land Musuem focuses on teaching children about Bible places and culture. Melissa Green has just finished decorating this room and we think the kids are going to say "WOW"! I know I did!

Our goal is to eventually have all of our rooms with that "VBS flare" so that our children's ministry environment is exciting and attractive to children while taking their Biblical education to the next level.

Classroom Update - Exciting Times

Nursery
Christian School of Kingwood will be moving their MDO to the new facility today and tomorrow. Beginning tomorrow morning, any parent that would like to help ready the nursery classrooms for Wednesday night will be able to find plenty of volunteer work! Emily Barclay will be helping me coordinate the needs for these rooms. The first step will be to get necessary equipment into the room and place orders for any furniture still needed. The second step, decorating the classroom will come after the room is repainted, cove base is replaced, and the floor is waxed. All those items should be scheduled in the near future.

Preschool
The construction of the new preschool rooms is about 10 days from completion. A majority of the furniture has arrived. We've had a lot of toys donated. We will need individuals, creative and otherwise, to be ready to make these room feel like rooms that our preschool will love to attend Bible class in each week. This is a big job and we need lot's of willing helpers.

Elementary
We are just waiting on paint in the newly acquired CSK classrooms and then we will begin decorating these rooms around the theme or class for each room. The classrooms that were built last year have been seeing some changes as well. Next week, the Journey Land Museum (Maps and Culture) will be opening. We also to hope to have the Bookworm (story) fully decorated.

I anticipate a decoration workday will be held later this month. But, don't wait until the workday to help out! We have ALOT of work that needs to be done. I can put anyone to work at almost anytime they are available.

Earn Bible Bucks By Listening to the Sermon

Right now, we do not have Worship 411. Most kids are sitting in the worship service with their parents. For our little bit older kids, I wanted to provide a resource to help the children engage in the sermon.

Today I read a blog that gave the idea for a sermon note taking worksheet and notebook. I thought this was a wonderful idea and excellent tool for helping children engage in a time that is more adult centered. If you'd like to read the original blog post that includes a copy of the form, click here. I will be making these forms available at the Family Ministry kiosk beginning this Sunday morning.

If a child would like to earn a Bible Buck for filling one out, all they have to do is show it to me sometime within that week. I'll initial the page and give them a Bible Buck.

The author of the original blog post let their children decorate a binder and place copies of the sermon worksheet in the binder so they could keep a journal of the sermons. You may even include a little pouch for pens, pencils and map colors. Younger kids may write some words but are not ready to fill in such a large amount of information. I have often encouraged River to draw pictures of the sermon. Either way, children are listening and interpreting what they are hearing so learning is facilitated. As a parent, you could use their sermon worksheet during the week to follow up with the children during their devotional time.

As a person who tends to learn best visually and who enjoys taking notes, I can see a very real benefit to using a worksheet like this even for myself. What a great tool to teach children early.

Journey Land Rotation Kick-Off: The Last Supper and Arrest

Journey Land, our Sunday AM Bible Class for elementary students Kindergarten - 5th grade, kicks off a new "theme" this next Sunday morning.

For over a year, we have been journeying through the life of Jesus. Sunday, October 24th, we will begin a new theme, "The Last Supper and Arrest". I know it's not the "right time of year" to start into this portion of Jesus life. But, the Journey Land concept is giving the kids real opportunity to dig deep into God's Word and understand His plan.

This Sunday, we will review the objectives from the last rotation and kick-off the follow objectives. You may want to review these at home with your children.
1) Reading with them the passages
a. Jesus enters Jerusalem on a donkey & clears the temple (John 12:12-18)
b. Jesus washes the disciples’ feet (John 13:1-10)
c. Last Supper (Mt. 26:20-30; Mk. 14:17-26; Lk. 22:14-30; Jn. 13:21-30)
d. Garden of Gethsemane and Arrest (Mt. 26:35-56; Mk. 14:32-52; Lk. 22:33-
52; Jn. 18:1-11)
2) Practice with them the names of the 12 disciples. Continue to review the books of the New Testament.
3) Practice the memory verses: Luke 22:19b, John 3:16,17
4) Use the Lord's Supper each week to help your child understand what each element represents. It's ok to whisper it in their ear. Remind them that Christians take the Lord Supper to remember that Jesus gave His life for us to deliver us from sin.

Current Construction Update

Most of you may not know what we are doing with the sounds of hammers, saws, and buckets of paint.

When the school moved out, the old school offices and the extended care rooms were left empty. The old school offices are being turned into two offices for Kevin and I. This will free up some much needed 1st floor space for the business office and a small meeting room in our old office location.

The extended care room and Linda's old office are being turned into 4 classrooms and a preschool drop off room. The preschool rooms will be accessible from the drop-off room so that we can check kids in and out more consistently. One room will eventually have a moving wall installed, so it can be opened into a double classroom for large group activities.

We felt it was important to move these rooms to the nursery hallway to make drop off and pick up easier for parents, especially visitors that may not know our building very well. This hall, is, of course, directly underneath our elementary classrooms.

New furniture has been ordered for these rooms. Generous donations and left-over Art Camp funds is paying for a good portion of the furniture and equipment. Your donation of toys is still appreciated. And, please remember, the church budget provides many of the on-going needs for our ministry, and, when we are meeting budget, I can also use these funds to keep the rooms well-supplied.

In the next 2-3 weeks, I will need MANY of you to help set up the nursery and cradle roll rooms. Please let me know that you would like to serve.

National Child Identification Program Id Kits

None of us likes to think about the fact that our children could get separated from us, through an accident, running away or a kidnapping. But, these things do happen and it's better to be prepared.

I was recently given "National Child Identification Program Kits" and have put some at the Family Kiosk so that each family may take one home. They are simple to use and it helps parents collect and store vital information that police may need if a child ever goes missing. They are free and are easily done at home. After the kit is complete, put it in a safe place in case of emergency.

After the hurricane and subsequent floods tore apart neighborhoods in New Orleans a few years ago, it made me think how vital it would be to have information like this available. We all heard stories of children separated from parents. I'm sure any information that a family had available helped to reunite children with family members. Here is a simple, easy way to keep that vital information on hand, just in case the unthinkable, happens.

Firefighter Sunday is Tomorrow

It looks like the weather is going to be great for the annual Firefighter Sunday. We honor the men and women of the local fire stations for their service and commitment to protect and save lives. After services, we have dinner on the grounds! It is so much fun.

Just a few reminders:

1) Elementary children will be asked to give the gifts they made to the firefighters during one part of the service. Don't worry when they get up and go down front to do this. I'll be giving all the information to them during Bible class.

2) Dinner on the grounds is a fun event for the family. Be sure to supervise your children.

3) To that end, remember the old playground is off limits. It is currently being moved to CSK.

4) The firefighters will usually show off their trucks to the kids if you ask. Just be sure to ask first as they are on-duty and may need to leave.

5) Greet all the firefighters and their families and help them feel welcomed.

Sunday afternoon, we had 9 children stay for Kid's For Christ. The theme of the day was Safety We 1) made crosses to honor the firefighters that help keep us safe.

2) Read the Berenstain Bears book, "The Golden Rule" and talked about how we should treat others and what to do if someone is bullying us.

3) We had a short Tae Kwon Do lesson by Master Victor Jordan of Tiger Rock Tae Kwon Do and we talked about what to do if someone tries to physically attack.

Fun Family Event - "Johnny Be Good"

Linda Copeland tells me that she and some CSK students are part of the cast for the musical "Johnny Be Good" that is being held at the Nathaniel Center on October 29, 30, and 31st.

The evening performance on October 30th is followed by a "sock hop" and there is a trunk or treat and facepainting between the Sunday afternoon performances on October 31st.

Linda has tickets to sell and we can get a group discount if enough KWCOC families attend. I thought the October 30th performance and sock hop sounds like a great Daddy/Daughter date night!

Here is an excerpt from Linda's email:

"By the way, this play is a musical based on The Prodigal Son. It is seti n the 50's at Sweet Sal's Soda Shoppe--I am Sweet Sal! Three of our kids are in a singing group in the play called The Peppermints. There are group rates available, and it is perfect for all ages...Kids will love it...lots of 50's ads,etc. I put up one poster for Barb Hoyt who is going to try to bring the Primetimers to one of the performances. If a bunch of the families come, we can get the group rate. You can buy those tickets from me directly if you would like. Would love to have our church well-represented."

Veggie Tales, "Sweetpea Beauty" is a new release that shows girls how they can be "A girl after God's own heart". We will watch the movie and have some crafts, snacks and games.

Fall is in the air!

I'm loving this cooler weather! Aren't you? Fall is in the air. Life Groups are off to a good start. We enjoy ours on Friday nights. Linda Trapp is doing an excellent job teaching Revelation to the LTC kids. The rotation classes are going smoothly.

Just in case you didn't know, October brings a busy month for our Children and Family Ministry. Firefighter Sunday is a couple of weeks away. The elementary kids will be putting together a craft at the Kid's For Christ event in a couple of weeks to give to the firefighters. At the same Kids For Christ event, I'm hoping to have some special people come talk to the kids about safety issues, being bullied, and how to respond positively.

The end of this month is the kids favorite holiday (besides Christmas). We have Sunday evening October 31st blocked off on our calendar to have a Trunk or Treat at the church building. While it will be a lower key event than some previous Fall Festivals, it will be a "safe place" for your children to trick or treat and give us adults a much needed time to eat candy and gab, which is some of ours favorite activities!

The Parent Link newsletter will have the final details and calendar. It will be available at the Family Ministry Kiosk on Wednesday night.

BTW, don't forget those cheap dinners at KWCOC on Wednesday nights. My kitchen has a sign in it that says, "Keep the Kitchen Clean. Eat Out". KWCOC makes it possible to avoid that least favorite task of cooking and doing dishes while having fun with friends all for one low, low price. And ... the best deal of all, your kids are ready for Bible Class when dinner is over!

Fourth and Fifth Grade Girls Bible Study

This summer, we hosted a Bible study on Monday afternoons for girls in the 4th grade - Middle School. We talked about character traits the girls should aspire to have in their lives, and, allowed the girls to ask questions that were relevant to their needs. The questions were challenging and even a little "sensitive" in nature. This just underscored the many mature issues our children are faced with at such a young age.

This school year, the 4th/5th grade girls will again have a Bible study focused on the needs of pre-teen girls. 6th - 8th grade will also be taking part of a Bible story for their age group in Middle School. As we talk about issues important to a young girl, we will study God's Word and learn what He has to say that will help us through this sometimes trying years.

I will be using the study guide "Becoming a Young Woman of God" written for Middle School girls. Even those these girls are not yet in Middle School, the design of the study will be to proactively prepare them for the transition to Middle School.

Just as we did over the summer, the girls will be encouraged to ask questions that are important to them. We learned over the summer that even our elementary girls had some fairly serious questions! The goal of this class is to answer any question they ask as clearly and honestly as possible and always point the children back to their parents. If a question is VERY sensitive in nature, we may ask the child to allow us to answer the question the next week and we will send a brief summary of the question and our answer to you, the parent, in advance.

Parents, you may want to know a little more about this study, so here are our lesson topics:

1) Less Than Becoming: A Look at Our Culture. It is good to be aware of cultural stereotypes set by media of how "respected" women should look. We will talk about being comfortable in the skin that God put us in, that we are beautiful just the way He made us.

2) Start Becoming: Exposing Lies and Embracing Truth. This chapter not only talks about cultures stereotypes but the "lies" that are used to help us believe those stereotypes.

3) Becoming Wise: Choices. One of our primary themes of our girls class is that "God gave us a choice". Choices are a gift from God. How we use our choices will help us grow closer to Him or separate us from Him. Girls can choose how they act, how they treat others, and how they feel about themselves.

4) Becoming Focused: Setting Goals. Our goals will help us determine who we are and how we are going to get there. Girls knowing and understanding their goals will help them to make wise choices throughout life.

5) Becoming Splendorous: Accepting the Skin Your Are In. Girls don't need to dress a certain way or over-do their make-up to get anyone's attention. Girls need to understand that God loves them and made them just the way He wants them.

6) Becoming Balanced: Keeping Your Body in Check. We all have seen the girls that wear clothes way to "old" for their age. What is modesty? Why is it so important to wear modest clothes?

7) Becoming of Christ: Self Worth. Girls may feel rejected by friends, boys and sometimes, even family. But, God has chosen each girl. This chapter is designed to help each girl discover their self-worth in Christ.

8) Becoming in Tune: Feelings. This chapter will help girls trust their feelings but not be slaved to their feelings.

Parent's Night Out - September 11th, 2010

Each month, we are going to host a "Parent's Night Out". Children 1 year and older may join the fun. We hope that parents use this time to enrich their marriages and fellowship with other Christian adults.

Parent's Night Out will be staffed with adult paid staff. The charge to your family is $20.00 for the 1st child and $15 on each additional child. If you'd like to order dinner, it's $4.00 per child or they can bring it from home.

"What's In The Bible"

Have you been looking for a new DVD resource for your children? Recently, I began hearing about a new video series, "What's In The Bible" by Phil Vischer, maker of Veggie Tales.

Last week, I was shopping at Mardel's and there it was, on-sale, so I picked up the first 3 DVD's of the 13 DVD series. Check out the DVD series here!

Tonight, I'm previewing the first DVD and loving it. It is a fun mix of puppets, real people, and animation. Very creative and getting lots of laughs from David and I.

But, even better, they are hitting some pretty difficult topics head-on in an attempt to not only teach kids the story of the Bible but to help them understand the truth of the Bible.

Kids may, someday, wonder why their Catholic friends have more books in the Bible then they do. Well, the "History Pirate" will explain it. And, what about that sticky subject of big "E" Evolution and Creationism? I guess you'll have to watch to find out.

Anyway, video's can't take the place of worship, or parents studying and praying with their children. They can't take the place of Bible study or fellowship. It's a tool to help explain hard issues to kids, build their faith, and provide an overview of the Bible.

Last Week's Girl's Bible Study

I didn't get a chance to blog about the girls Bible study from last week. We are now up to 12 girls ... 8 in 4th/5th and 4 middle school girls. It's so great to have all these girls together. The Middle School girls stepped up into a natural leadership role. But, I do believe their faith is being reinforced and deepen through our study as well.

We talked about having courage. Courage like Rahab. Rahab wasn't the type of person that you would have thought to do the right thing. But, she did. She had heard about God and she knew she needed to be on His side. Rather or not she believed in Him, she had the courage to cross her own people, hide the spies, and help them out of Jericho. Rahab, saved her life and her families life by making this courageous decision.

Then, the girls talked about the courage that they must have each day in their daily lives. They must have courage to make new friends. They must have courage to do the right thing. They must have courage to show wisdom in how they use technology. And, they must have courage in the desire to "date" boys.

One of our Middle School girls shared what they learned at camp. They talked about having an inner circle and outer circle of friends. The inner circle are those that challenge a girl to have a deeper relationship with Christ. The outer circle are those they can influence for Christ. This strikes a good balance and develops priorities in relationships.

Then we talked about boys. Alot. Again, I saw great leadership from our Middle school girls. We talked about three things specifically:

1) The girls need to have a serious conversation with their parents about when it's ok to "go out with boys" or "date". Parent's refrain from answering, "when you are 30". Kid's want and need boundaries, it's ok to give them some reasonable boundaries.

2) The dating is an activity that can be, and should be, reserved until the age a teen is beginning to think about serious long-term relationships. Dating is to find a future spouse.

3) Once a girl begins to date, they may have to make other choices, like when to hold his hand, or kiss or so on. These things are progressive, so it's best to wait until they are older so that they are not tempted.

Important Change for Sunday Nights
Kevin Welch will be teaching the Sunday Nights at the movies this summer. We have decided that we will meet in the auditorium with the church family instead of doing the family nights @ KWCOC. All movies seem to be family friendly but an alternate will be provided if we identify any movie that is not appropriate for young children. We will have fresh made popcorn, kids are welcomed to wear their PJ's and bring blanket and pillows. We have found these family film nights to be very fun in the past and look forward to doing it again!

Important Change for Special Events
A sign-up sheet for each special event (preschool story time, lock-in, etc) has been made available at the Family Kiosk. This will help us determine our supply and volunteer needs. An event will be canceled if participation is limited! So, it is very important that you sign your child up for the event!!!! Deadline for events through July 13th will be Sunday, July 4th.

Art Camp Workday
Tuesday, June 29th, 10:00 AM will be an Art Camp workday. We need all hands on deck! Childcare will be provided.

Girls Study this week: Being Unselfish

The girls in the 4th grade - MS will be studying about Moses mother today and talking about being "unselfish".

I just got back from a week at camp. I got to spend a lot of time with our KWCOC kids. I also got to spend a lot of time with Reese. I couldn't help but identify emotionally with Moses' Mom today as I read the story in preparation for the class.

Moses' Mom nursed him until he was 3 months old. At 3 months old, she couldn't continue to hide him and if she did and he was discovered, he would be killed. She had to protect her soon and the only way to do that was to let him go. She built a small boat, a basket of sorts, for him to float among the reeds. She couldn't have known that he would be discovered by the Pharaoh's daughter, or brought back to her to raise. God works amazing plans in our lives when we are unselfish and do His will. How hard it must have been to let him go into that water! How she must has cried knowing her son may not ever come back to her! Her heart must have broke as she made the decision that was more likely to save his life but was still highly improbable at best. Yet, she let go.

Unselfish love is God's plan for the world. It is God's plan for our girls too!

However, in school, they meet selfishness in most everything they do. I'm convinced that all sin is rooted in our selfish desires. Because, when we are thinking about other people and putting God first, it's much more difficult for Satan to get to us. Our girls are in the midst of selfishness. Kids are not taught to be unselfish ... ever been to a kids sporting event? Most kids have parents whose whole world revolves around them and too often, these children are being taught that getting ahead by any means possible is the "right" thing for their life.

Selfishness in girls have given rise to the "Mean Girls" phenomenon. I talked to one HS girl who said, "Girls are just mean. Really mean. They will do anything for themselves. Even my friends,I know to expect that from them".

So, as we prepare our girls to transition into Middle School, we can begin teaching them healthy relational skills, how to deal with conflict, and how to always put another persons "right" interest before their own. They should always think about building up and not tearing down. Gossip and sarcasm need to be seen as SINFUL and not just wrong. Parents can help their girls prepare for Middle School by walking through these issues with their girls.

This weeks Bible verse is: Ephesians 5:21. The Daily Beauty Treatment (or daily Bible reading) is 1 Corinthians 13. And our Spiritual Aerobics is thinking of a way to be unselfish each day and work on it each week. We will talk about this more next week at Bible Study.

Bible Study for Girls in 4th Grade - 8th Grade

Every Monday, we will meet at 2:00 PM for a study called, "Beautiful in God's Eyes". We will be preparing girls for their transition into Middle School and the new experiences they will face. I'd love for your pre-teen/teen to be involved. We will not meet next Monday, June 14, due to camp.

Dear Parents,
I am so happy to have your daughter taking part in "Beautiful In God's Eyes." I look forward to spending this time teaching the girls, and I hope that the class will be a blessing for each of them.

This class will deal with the fact that beauty in God's eyes is not based on external appearance, but on the heart. Our attitudes and behaviors make us beautiful in God's eyes. Girls are constantly bombarded with images of physical perfection in our culture. This can lead to low self-image and competitive, judgmental behavior. I hope that in this class the girls can begin to see that they should judge themselves and others not by what is on the outside, but what comes from the inside.

The class is designed so that the girls will be doing work not only here, but also home during the week as well. In this we will need your help. Each week your daughter will have a memory verse, a daily Bible reading, a prayer commitment, and a behavior to practice. Please help her work on learning her memory verse. She should read, or have read to her, the Bible reading selection each day. This is the same Scripture every day of the week. It would be helpful if you would discuss this Scripture with your daughter as well as reading it. Each girl is also asked to make a commitment to pray for one classmate during the week. Encourage your daughter to be faithful in this commitment. Each week the girls will select something specific that they will work on in their own lives. Celebrate with your daughter's successes and support her when she struggles. Help her remember that God's grace covers us all as we seek to do God's will. The girls are encouraged to bring their Bibles each week. An occasional gentle reminder would be helpful.

Each girl will be assigned a prayer partner, a mother of an older child or even a "grandparent". These prayer partners will pray daily for their girls, send them encouragement notes, and attend a special blessing activity at the end of the summer.

I am excited about working with the girls during this time. I hope that if you have any questions or concerns, you will feel free to contact me. I hope also that you will pray for me as I take on the responsibility of teaching your daughter and the other girls.

I have decided to start using the blog again. I never intended to quit using it, it's just we added a website for me to keep up with too. The more ways we have to communicate, the better, with the exception I need a permanent helper to take care of all the communication that takes so much time.

Check the web for static information! Check the blog and facebook page for current information and news. The blog updates to Facebook automatically. Short "need" announcements will be seen on Facebook.

Of course, there is still the bulletin, Parent Link, the kiosk and all the information you can find there at any time.

As for me, I really like to keep every up to speed about what's happening in and out of our classrooms. And, with camp around the corner, pictures are always welcomed.

Important Information Regarding Worship 411

Carri Tacker and Chuck Debenon have lead Worship 411, the elementary children's worship, since the beginning of 2009. These two leaders have invested a considerable amount of time and energy in teaching the elementary children at KWCOC during the sermon. The children have enjoyed Worship 411 and it has provided an age appropriate opportunity for the children during a time in the regular service that some children find it difficult to sit still and pay attention.

Carri and Chuck have decided to take a much needed break. As we continue to evaluate the future of Worship 411, we have decided to take a break for the summer quarter (months of June, July, and August). During this time, we will determine the future of Worship 411. In order for Worship 411 to continue in the fall, it will be very important for a leadership team of dedicated volunteers to be established and to share the responsibility for teaching in this ministry. If this is an interest and passion for you, please let me know as soon as possible. Planning for the fall should begin not later than August 1st.

I understand that our parents have many different opinions regarding an elementary children's worship service. If you would like to discuss these with me, please call or email anytime. I will be meeting with the elders and deacons that serve in the Children and Family Ministry over the summer to discuss our next steps and would like to share the parent responses with them at that time.

Spring Brings on Busy Times

Spring brings on all the planning for summer, and with that planning, things are hopping around KWCOC right now. Here are a few things to be award of going on tomorrow:

Art Camp has enrolled almost 230 kids, with payment! But we only have 3 lead teachers signed up of 12 needed. Sign up tomorrow (Sunday) at the Family Ministry Kiosk.

New Beginnings Christian Camp was attended last year by 30 elementary children and 10 staff members. Fundraising is a must to help support the camp. Join us Sunday evening from 4:45-5:45 for a Pancake Supper benefiting the camp. $5.00 a person and donations are greatly appreciated!!!!

As we work towards having the best Children's Ministry in Kingwood, attention to every detail is very important. We have made some changes in our nursery and want to make sure EVERY volunteer knows about the changes and they are well communicated. Immediately following worship there is a short meeting in the FLC.

Art Camp Registrations

This morning, we opened our Art Camp registration to the community. As of right now, 96 children 4 years - 2nd grade and 19 children in 3rd-5th grade have enrolled in Art Camp. Word is getting out fast, so, please fill out your Art Camp registration form as soon as possible. We still need volunteers, too.

Children's Offering - Where is it going?

The Children's Service Committee (3rd-5th grade students) met this past Wednesday for our semi-monthly meeting. The children are learning how contributions work and how hard it is to make the decisions about where the money is spent.

Each time your child puts a dollar into the basket on Sunday morning, it is helping others in our community and world. Our goal is to encourage as many children as possible to bring $2.00 each. This will help the kids meet their "budget".

Last month, we cut a check to Jeremiah's Hope for around $2400. This included contributions from several months as well as the change drive and some other Jeremiah's Hope contributions. The kids were directly involved in making all of that happen.

This meeting we read several stories of Jesus' compassion and healing. We talked about the fact that there are many ways to show compassion as well help facilitate healing.

During the month of April and May our children's contributions will be sent out as follows:
$100 - diapers for the Hayes family. Katy Hayes has been seriously ill with Strep A infection and has had to have both her arms and legs amputated. She remains hospitalized, still fighting for her life.
$100 - "Help Lauren Learn". Lauren is a deaf/blind elementary child that lives in Kingwood. Her parents came to our Bible class last summer to help us better understand Lauren's world. More information may be found on this blog by searching for "Help Lauren Learns."
$20 - Dr. Bob's MS150 ride. The kids were quite amazed that Dr. Bob could ride a bicycle all the way to Austin. They were happy it was to raise money to cure an illness and the only reason they could see that it would be a good idea to ride a bicycle all the way to Austin. They wanted to show their support and "awe" at this feat!

What's For Dinner Sunday April 25th? PANCAKES!!!

New Beginnings camp is hosting a pancake supper fundraiser. Plates will be $5.00 a person. Donations are happily accepted!!! It will be Sunday, April 25th from 4:45-5:45.

New Beginnings camp is attended by our children as well as children from quite a few other congregations around Texas. New Beginnings Camp is not funded by any one congregation. Therefore, many needs are covered by the donations given by generous church members. This fundraiser will raise MUCH NEEDED funds for the general budget of camp that provides for scholarships, crafts, snacks, administrative items and part of the staff tuition. Staff are responsible for the full tuition of camp, though, fundraisers provide up to 1/2 of their tuition in appreciation of the service they will be giving the children during the week of camp.

Without fundraisers like this one, we would not have the staff or supplies to make camp successful.
