A Thank You Note from Maj S. Brackin: US Army

Not too long ago, the children in our ministry drew pictures to be sent to the troops serving in Iraq. I had forgotten that we had taken this opportunity until today, when we received a thank you note from Maj S. Brackin. In fact, I'm having a Mommy Moment in that I can't even remember when we did this project but I remember the kids working so hard on their pictures! Several of our children participated in this project and while he is referring to one of the pictures that he received I'm sure each member of the armed forces that received a picture was equally touched. I thought I'd share it with you all. I've stapled it to the bulletin board if you'd like to drop by and check it out. It would be a good reminder to your children how a little act of kindness is serving the world in the name of Christ.

I received your wonderful drawing - a beautiful butterfly, orange with blue wings, surrounded by hearts and flowers. It made me think of my little boy and girl at home in Austin, Texas. Your drawing reached me in Basrah, Iraq on December 6th, 2010. I found it at the 450 on my way to the gym. Kid's For Christ - Serving Impact

November 21st

1st -5th grades and Kindergarten with parents

Bring a sack lunch. Lunch will be eaten in the FLC before the bus leaves at 12:30.

Children will help stock the Impact Food Pantry and serve lunch.

Bring money for an ice cream stop on the way home.

At Walmart you can buy them by the case, you get more for your money with the plastic packages of noodles instead of the cups.

Parents this is a great opportunity to raise your children with compassionate hearts. Please take the time to read to them what this ministry does to be the hands and feet of Jesus and they can be a part it!!

First and Second Grade Wednesday Night Service Project

This Wednesday night, our 1st/2nd grade class will be joining one of the START projects and taking a field trip. We will be going to a fire station in Kingwood to share some goodies baked by our members. Since I was sick last Wednesday, we didn't get to make cards for the firefighters. If your children want to come to the classroom by 6:00 PM we will make cards and be ready to leave at 6:30 PM. We will travel by KWCOC bus and be back by the end of service. START is our Wednesday night "Serve the World" meeting which hosts many different service projects that reach well beyond the walls of KWCOC in order to serve others in the name of Jesus.

Teaching Kids to "Serve the World"

We have been honored to have Andrew Kelley, of Jeremiah's Hope, visit with us this weekend. Saturday night, he met with our Children's Service Committee at the home of Emy Stewart. Four of our most mature, sweet, and spiritual little ladies asked Andrew questions for 2 hours about the mission field in which he serves. I could see the world being expanded in these little girls eyes as they realized that we are very blessed compared to many other children in world.

Today, during Sunday morning class, Andrew told the kids about all the ways he, his wife Jenny, and there team minister to children in the orphanage, the transitional living center, the hospital (abandoned babies), in their village of 200, and through Pine Branch Christian Camp. Again, our children were impressive in their attention and their questions. My prayer is that God will show our children little glimpses of what it might be like to live elsewhere in the world and inspire them to think globally with their lives and how they may impact the world for Christ.

During the month of February, our children are hosting the "Kids Changing Kids Lives" coin drive to benefit the ministries of Jeremiah's Hope. Andrew is also forming summer and winter mission teams to serve in the camp.

Children's Service Committee Meeting

Calling all 3rd-5th grade students that plan to be part of the children's service committee. We will be meeting at Emy Stewarts house, Saturday evening, from 5:30-7:30 to make plans for the Jeremiah's Hope "Kids Changing Kids Lives". We will play some fun games, have a devotional, and visit with Andrew Kelly, missionary from Ukraine. We will also review some potential organizations helping children in Haiti in the wake of the earthquake. This "committee's" purpose is give kids real life experience in how the church operates behind the scenes, how decisions are made to fund projects, and how their combined hard work can change the world.

Kid's Changing Kid's Lives Coin Drive

Tomorrow we begin our annual coin drive for Kids Changing Kids Lives. Every February, children and church members take a can and fill it with coins. The money raised goes to Jeremiah's Hope, a ministry to orphans in Ukraine. With this money, they have been able to provide facilities and supplies for a camp that gives the children a loving environment and teaches them about God's Word.

Stop by the table in the foyer and pick up a can. All cans will be due at the end of February. Missionary Andrew Kelly will be here next Sunday evening to tell us more about Jeremiah's Hope. More Information.

Silent Night, Holy Night

Silent night is a favorite Christmas song for our children and one they sang last night as we visited 5 of our members, some widows, some recovering from recent illnesses, last night. Silent night was not what their neighborhoods had as 20-30 of our children and family members stood in their yards or living rooms and sang five of our favorite Christmas carols.

The Kid's For Christ, our activity group for 1st-5th grades, has sang Christmas carols every year at nursing homes and sometimes at members homes. This year, we decided to exclusively visit our members and Jeanese made us a list of some members to call. I believe every child and parent was blessed by these men and women's warm hearts and tenderness as we sang the song. There were tears, laughter, hugs, and some wonderful songs.

David and I thought that one of the best things about visiting these members last night is that most of the members we saw, our children would not usually have the opportunity of knowing. Their paths just don't cross that much. Inter-generational relationships are sorely missing in a large congregation and I know that we built some bridges between the generations last night.

Thank you again to the men and women that invited us to their homes and the families that came out to sing.

Children's Service Committee for 3rd-5th Grades

Last year, when Andrew Kelly was here, he mentioned that some churches have Children Mission Committees. These groups of older elementary kids, function similar to the missions committee for the church, but, to help kids connect with service and mission opportunities that are important to them.

Since we began the Children's Offering as part of our offering time, we have collected enough money to give a group like this some seed money. I've asked Emy Stewart, Sylvia McAdams, and Eileen Weed to serve as sponsors for this group.

They will lead the children in determining mission and service opportunities and advertising to the rest of the children so that they know how their children's offering is helping spread the Good News. They may also find an occasional service project that we implement for our children's ministry.

The goal is to help train responsible children who have a heart for serving the world and teach them how a church might evaluate and implement support, gifts or projects outside our church walls.

Any 3rd-5th grade student may ask me to "apply" to be on the committee. We will "interview" them to help them understand that we are giving them a new responsibility. These children will learn responsible ways to "Serve the World" as a group and experience the joy of knowing God's Word is being shared to others in our community, nation and world.

Serve The World - Stationary for Troops

Our kids worked hard today making stationary for the troops that are currently serving in the war. This stationary will be provided for these brave men and women so that they may write home to family and friends. The children also wrote an "Any Hero" letter, that will be sent to members of the armed services that might not receive much mail or may have circumstances that a little "pick-me-up" would help them to feel better. We had about 20 elementary children stay to work on these projects. Here are a few pictures. I got a little busy and didn't get pictures of the "Any Hero" letter writing.

Children will make a variety of blank cards that will be sent around world, providing stationary for soldiers to write home. Children will also write an "any hero" letter, which will be given to soldiers who need a pick me up.

Adult helpers are needed. Please stay after services to help the children.

Fire Fighter Sunday

It's time for Fire Fighter Sunday! That is the Sunday that we honor our hard working, brave, and committed public servants, especially the fire fighters. Sunday morning, when you arrive to KWCOC, you may find our parking lot full of fire trucks. Have no fear! The building is not on fire. But many of the men and women that serve at our local stations will join us to worship God and pray blessings over their lives, which they put in danger everyday. One station in the Houston area last two men this year in the line of duty and that station will be joining us as well. What a great way to say thank you for the sacrifices these men and women make daily.

Sunday morning, children activities are as usual, with the exception of Worship 411, which will dismiss so that the older children can watch all of the celebration of the fire fighters! But, after services, you'll have the opportunity to stay and fellowship with the fire fighters and the families at Kingwood, through a yummy meal. I hope that you get involved.

Oh, and one more thing, most years, we have the opportunity to draw the name of a fire fighter to cover daily in prayer. This is a great way to allow your children to serve the world, by praying specifically for these brave men and women! Encourage your kiddo's to take part!

Summer of service - remodel

As you all know, we have been remodeling a section of our building in order to create a space for elementary Bible classes. This week, we had cabinets installed, so, tonight your children helped to put supplies away into the cabinets. You should be proud of your kids. They worked hard to put things away, sweep and mop the construction dust from the floors, and organize our supplies. Give your kids a pat on the back. I thank them for their hard work.

Family Night at the Movies and Summer of Service

Hi parents!

Looking for something for your kids to do? Or, are you looking for ways to serve the children's ministry and help us prepare for upcoming events? Check the calendar to the side of this blog for all of our events.

We will be having Family Night at the Movies this week, July 12! Children should bring an item or two to recycle as we discussed in our summer of service class and popcorn will be provided.

Also, we will not be going on a field trip for Summer of Service. However, we do have a project plannned for the evening.

Learning About Deafblindness

Last night, our kids got to meet Paul and Caroline Daley, Lauren Daley's parents. I posted links to Lauren's story in a previous blog. Our kids were great! In Caroline's words, "Thank you so much for having us come speak to your class last night. We had a great time! The kids were so informed and involved, it was wonderul how much they wanted to learn."

I know our children understand the world of deafblindness better because of the lessons they learned from the Daleys. But, one comment that Caroline and Paul made stuck with me. They said, and I might be a little off on the wording, that they are fighting this fight for Lauren's education not only for Lauren but for other deafblind children. When they have the opportunity they will walk right back in the forest and help bring other kids out woods. Wow! How many of us have life experiences that we could jump right back into the forest and help someone out of the woods?

Our elementary kids studied the story of the blind man in John 9 the week before the Daley's visited us. The disciples were trying to make sense of the man's blindness and Jesus answered them with this statement, "This happened so that God's work could be shown in his life". Without Lauren and her parents, the world would be less aware of what an intervener could do for such a young child. (They explained that current law does not recognize the profession of intervener nor does it provide this service to anyone under 18.) Lauren has brought together a whole community to help her achieve her education. Wow! What good can be done when hearts are open to helping others!

Summer of Service - Jesus Heals the Blind Man

Tonight, we are going to talk about Jesus healing the blind man with our Summer of Service group (1st - 5th grade). We will do this through fun activities to help children learn the Bible story.

Next Wednesday night, July 1st, our children will be working on a special project for Kingwood resident, Lauren Daley, who is deaf/blind. Lauren's Mom, Caroline, will be our special guest and will help us understand how we can show compassion just like Jesus did by participating in activities that help Lauren have a special teacher. Many in the Kingwood community have surrounded Lauren's cause and helped to raise money for her special teacher. Read more about Lauren's story. Lauren's mom just let me know that Lauren's story was recently featured in the Kingwood Observer and is linked to the National Helen Keller Center.


If there are any families available for the 4th of July, we have a special opportunity to help the Daley's during the 4th of July parade. Let me know if you are in town and interested in helping.

The upper elementary may enjoy the special summer praise night tonight in the auditorium. Please consider with your child if they are old enough and would engage in a special time of worship. There will be a lot of singing as well as other activities. Parents, I believe this uplifting time will be a highlight of your week if you choose to come.

Lastly, we are going to postpone our ER trip to a later date and make it available to our upper elementary. Thanks for being flexible as we look for activities that are just right for our children.

Summer of service begins

Tonight, we started our summer of service class for the elementary kids. First up, baking cookies to give to our church members. We showed them hospitality. The kids had fun making and handing out their cookies. They also got to eat a few before going home. Next week, SOS will be taking a break for camp. Elementary children at church will have a movie night!
